An attack on the Sonno Joi faction by the Shinsengumi at the end of the Edo period. On June 5, 1864 (Genji 1), about 30 Sonno Joi patriots, including Miyabe Teizo of Higo, Yoshida Toshimaro of Choshu, and Kitazoe Yoshimaro of Tosa, had gathered at the Ikeda Inn in Sanjo Kawaramachi, Kyoto, when Kondo Isami and about 30 other Shinsengumi members, with the support of the Kyoto Shugoshoku and Shoshidai, attacked them, causing many casualties among the Sonno Joi patriots. Nine people, including Miyabe Teizo and Yoshida Toshimaro, were killed by slashing, and more than 20 were captured. This incident was an attempt by the Sonn-joi patriots, who had been in decline since the previous year, to recapture their power by planning to raise an army in Kyoto, but it ended up boosting the reputation of the Shinsengumi. The purpose of the Ikedaya meeting was to decide on a course of action following the arrest of their comrade, Kotaka Shuntaro, but it is well known that Takayoshi Kido (Katsura Kogoro) was in attendance, but was able to avoid danger by going to the Tsushima Domain residence because he arrived too early for the meeting.

幕末における新選組の尊攘(そんじょう)派襲撃事件。1864年（元治1）6月5日、京都・三条河原町の旅館池田屋に集まった肥後の宮部鼎蔵(みやべていぞう)、長州の吉田稔麿(よしだとしまろ)、土佐の北添佶麿(きたぞえよしまろ)ら約30名の尊攘派志士を、近藤勇(こんどういさみ)以下約30名の新選組隊士が、京都守護職や所司代の応援を得て襲撃したもので、尊攘派志士に多くの被害を出した。宮部鼎蔵、吉田稔麿ら9名が斬死(ざんし)し、二十数名が捕らえられた。この事件は、前年来後退していた尊攘派志士たちが京都で挙兵を計画し勢力を盛り返そうとした事件であったが、かえって新選組の名を一躍高めた。この池田屋の会合は、同志古高俊太郎(こたかしゅんたろう)が捕らえられたことに対する善後策をたてるためであったが、木戸孝允(たかよし)（桂小五郎）が参加しながらも、集会に早すぎたということで対馬(つしま)藩邸に赴き難を免れたことは有名。
