A city in central Hungary, located on the great plain between the Danube and Tisza rivers. Population 105,000 (1996). Capital of Bács-Kiskun County. A "rural town" that enjoyed urban privileges from the 14th century. Under Turkish rule, it was a large-scale farming town under the direct control of the Sultan, and guilds flourished within the town. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it developed as the center of the tanja (individually decentralized agricultural businesses) that developed in the surrounding areas. Today, it is the center of great plain agriculture. It is famous for producing grains, fruit, and pálinka (strong fruit wine). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
