It is a tropical tree consisting of about 600 species in 40 genera. Many of them are economically valuable because they secrete resin and latex and produce delicious fruit. The sapodilla tree Achras zapota , native to tropical America, produces sweet, juicy fruit similar to that of a persimmon. The bark is damaged and the latex is collected to make chicle, the raw material for chewing gum. The gutta-percha tree Palaquium gutta , native to the Malay Peninsula, produces gutta-percha. This is a rubber with low elasticity but good electrical insulation properties; it was once used as an insulator for undersea electric cables and as a filling material for cavities.

熱帯産の樹木で，約 40属 600種からなる。樹脂や乳液を分泌したり美味な果実を産するため経済的な価値のあるものが多い。熱帯アメリカ産のサポジラ Achras zapota はカキに似た甘い汁の多い果実を生じる。また樹皮を傷つけて得られる乳液を集めてチューインガムの原料チクルをつくる。マレー半島原産のグッタペルカノキ Palaquium gutta はグッタペルカを産する。これは弾性の少ないゴムであるが電気の絶縁性がよく，かつては海底電線の絶縁体に使われ，また虫歯の充填材料として用いる。
