Ishimochi (Argyrosomus argentatus) - Ishimochi (English spelling)

Japanese: イシモチ(石持) - イシモチ（英語表記）Argyrosomus argentatus

A marine fish of the family Sciaenidae in the order Perciformes (illustration). It is so named because it has large otoliths made of calcium carbonate inside its skull. These otoliths help maintain balance and detect sound. Its other name, white croaker or croaker, comes from the loud gurgling sound it makes with its swim bladder, which is particularly noticeable during spawning. Its body is silvery-white, with large black spots on its gill covers, which can sometimes become very pale. It reaches a total length of over 40 cm.

スズキ目ニベ科の海産魚（イラスト）。頭骨内に炭酸カルシウムでできた大きな耳石（じせき）をもつためこの名がある。この耳石は体の平衡を保ったり，音を感じとる役目をしている。別名のシログチまたはグチは，本種がうきぶくろを用いてグーグーという大きな音を出すことに由来するが，これはとくに産卵時に顕著である。体は銀白色で，えらぶたに大きな黒斑があることが特徴であるが，ときにきわめて薄くなることもある。全長40cm余に達する。
