Joruri Gidayubushi (a type of Japanese drama with a gidayu-bushi narration). Sewamono (a story about a family of two). Written by Chikamatsu Hanji. First performed at the Takemotoza Theater in Osaka in September 1780 (An'ei 9). Based on the love story of Osome Hisamatsu, which was circulated in kasaibun (traditional Japanese poetry) and other sources, and on the kabuki plays such as Shinju Kimon no Kado (The Love Suicides at the Devil's Corner) (1710), Kino Kaion's Shirashibori (The White Sleeves) (1710), and Suga Sensuke's Somemoyo Imoseno Kadomatsu (The Some Moyo Imoseno Kadomatsu) (1767), this is a representative work of the same genre. The story is about Hisamatsu, the surviving son of Sagara Jodayu, a retainer of the Izumi Ishizu family, who was entrusted to the care of Nozaki Village's farmer Kyusaku. While working as an apprentice at a pawnbroker's oil shop, he falls in love with the owner's daughter Osome, but is caught up in a conspiracy by villains and commits double suicide. The first volume, "Nozaki Village," has survived to the present day and has become one of the most popular plays in both Bunraku puppet theater and Kabuki. Kyusaku tries to arrange a marriage between Hisamatsu, who has been sent to live at an inn, and his daughter Omitsu, but Omitsu, who is in a tight spot for a marriage proposal, comes to visit. At first jealous, Omitsu is moved by the sight of Osome and Hisamatsu, who are prepared to die, and becomes a nun to give up her love. The two tearfully return to their homes, Osome in a boat with her mother who has come to pick them up, and Hisamatsu in a palanquin along the bank, to return to the oil shop. The contrast between the innocent country girl O-Mitsu and the precocious town girl O-Some is skillfully portrayed, and the final withdrawal of the boat and palanquin is a pleasing performance, featuring gorgeous shamisen melody in the Gidayu version and effective use of both hanamichi paths in the Kabuki version.
