Its official name was the Wiener Werkstätte - Vienna Artists' Production Cooperative. It was founded in 1903 by Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser as a crafts factory for the Vienna Secession. It attempted to reinstate crafts and artisanal handiwork by incorporating them into the design creative process. The organization was heavily influenced by the Guild of Craftsmen run by architect Charles Robert Ashbee, who participated in the British Arts and Crafts movement. Under Hoffmann's direction, it aimed to become a comprehensive arts workshop, and worked on a wide range of projects, including furniture, vases, tableware and other everyday items, as well as books, jewelry, textiles and architecture. It was characterized by decorative designs based on simple geometric forms based on squares, but after Dagold Pöche joined in 1915, it gradually began to use more curvaceous decorations. It closed in 1932 due to financial difficulties. Representative works include the Hôtel Stoclet in Brussels (1905-1911), for which he was responsible for the architecture, interior design, and tableware design.
