A private academic research organization in history. Its predecessor was the Kogokai, which was formed in February 1931. In December 1957, a group of young researchers, mainly from the Department of History at the University of Tokyo, who were dissatisfied with the authoritarian tendencies of previous academic societies amid the reactionary currents immediately following the Manchurian Incident, founded the organization as a way to conduct historical research from a progressive and modern standpoint, and to promote relaxed research and friendship. Its journal, Rekishigaku Kenkyu (Rekishigaku Kenkyu), was first published in November 1958. The organization was active in research activities in the 1930s, and continued to conduct conscientious academic research under fascism, but with the intensification of the war and increased oppression, it ceased all activities in 1944, and also suspended publication of its journal.
