Vincentius (of Saragossa)

A Spanish martyr saint born around 304 AD. In Spanish, he is called Vicente. He is also called "Vincentius of Valencia." He became a deacon in Zaragoza and was martyred in Valencia during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. The tortures he endured are described in detail by Augustine and others, but they are strongly legendary. In art, he is depicted as a beautiful young man wearing deacon's robes and carrying the tools of martyrdom: a millstone, an iron grate, a whip, and a crow that is said to have protected his body from wild animals when it was left out in the open. Many churches in Spain are dedicated to this saint, and he was also widely venerated in France as the patron saint of wine growing.

スペインの殉教聖人。スペイン語ではビセンテVicente。〈バレンシアのウィンケンティウス〉ともいう。サラゴサで助祭となり，ディオクレティアヌス帝の時代にバレンシアで殉教。彼の受けた拷問の数々はアウグスティヌスらによって詳しく語られているが，伝説的色彩が濃い。美術では，助祭の服をつけた美しい若者として表現され，持物は殉教具の石臼，鉄格子，むち，野ざらしにされた遺体を野獣から守ったというカラスなど。スペインの教会は数多くこの聖人にささげられており，フランスでもブドウ栽培の守護聖人として広く崇敬された。
