A Spanish martyr saint born around 304 AD. In Spanish, he is called Vicente. He is also called "Vincentius of Valencia." He became a deacon in Zaragoza and was martyred in Valencia during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. The tortures he endured are described in detail by Augustine and others, but they are strongly legendary. In art, he is depicted as a beautiful young man wearing deacon's robes and carrying the tools of martyrdom: a millstone, an iron grate, a whip, and a crow that is said to have protected his body from wild animals when it was left out in the open. Many churches in Spain are dedicated to this saint, and he was also widely venerated in France as the patron saint of wine growing. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
