…Leader of the Abbasid revolution in Khorasan. Sent as a secret propagandist (da'i) by Ibrahim b. Muḥammad (701/702-749) of the Abbasid dynasty, he led the movement to overthrow the Umayyad dynasty, and in 747 led an armed uprising at Merv, leading a revolutionary army westward and crushing the Umayyad forces. He became governor of Khorasan for this feat, and during his term in office in 751 he defeated a large Tang army at Talas in Central Asia, further increasing his fame. …

...A descendant of Muhammad's uncle Abbas. After the death of his brother Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad (701/702-749), who led the Abbasid movement to overthrow the Umayyads, he became caliph in 749 at the suggestion of the revolutionary forces that entered Kufa. The following year he defeated the Umayyad army at the banks of the Zab River and killed the caliph Marwan II, putting an end to the conflict. He then turned to oppressing the Shiites and established the authority of the Abbasids.
