A Hindu doctrine that Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva are in fact the same god, or are merely different names for the supreme principle of the universe. The Hari-Vansha, which is a supplement to the great epic poem Mahabharata, already teaches that Vishnu and Shiva are the same, but in the Puranas the three gods, including Brahma, are stated to be the same. In other words, the supreme principle of the universe creates the world as Brahma, maintains it as Vishnu, and destroys it as Shiva. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
