The safe and efficient navigation of ships, airplanes, and other moving objects to their destinations using information obtained by radar. The display method of radar used on ships is plan position indication (abbreviated as PPI), and the information obtained from this display is the polar coordinate position of the target reflecting the radar waves, the approximate shape of the target's radio wave reflecting surface, and the radio wave reflection strength of the target. Compared to other radio navigation methods that only provide positional information relative to fixed stations, radar is superior in terms of the variety and quantity of information.

レーダーにより得られる情報を使って，船や飛行機などの移動体を安全に，かつ効率よく目的地まで移動させること。船で使用されているレーダーの表示方式は平面図表示plan position indication(略称PPI)で，この表示から得られる情報は，レーダー電波を反射する物標の極座標位置，物標の電波反射面のおおよその形状，その物標の電波反射強度などである。他の電波航法が固定局との位置関係情報のみであるのに比べ，情報の種類ならびに量において優れている。
