An early music performance group using period instruments. Founded in 1952 by Austrian cellist and conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt (1929- ), the group began public performances in 1957, using original instruments and aiming to perform in accordance with the performance practices of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. They established their reputation with their performance of the complete Brandenburg Concertos by JS Bach in 1966. Their performances are solid, supported by a deep knowledge of early music, and they can be said to be at the forefront of today's early music movement.
