Founded in 1952 by Austrian cellist and conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt (1929- ), the group began public performances in 1957, using original instruments and aiming to perform in accordance with the performance practices of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. They established their reputation with their performance of the complete Brandenburg Concertos by JS Bach in 1966.
