In his native London, he trained in the offices of Victorian Gothic architect William Burges (1827-81) and other places, and in 1876 he demonstrated his talent by winning the Soane Prize design competition sponsored by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The following year (Meiji 10), he came to Japan as a teacher of architecture at the Imperial College of Engineering, where he trained many architects, including Tatsuno Kingo, Katayama Tokuma, and Sone Tatsuzo, and created the foundations for modern Western-style architecture in Japan. …
