KBrO 3 (167.00). Potassium hydroxide and bromine are reacted in an aqueous solution to produce potassium hypobromite KBrO, which is then boiled to convert to KBrO 3 and cooled to precipitate crystals. White trigonal ionic crystals (or powder). Contains trigonal pyramidal BrO 3 - . Br-O1.64 Å. ∠O-Br-O106°. Density 3.27 g cm -3 . When ignited, it decomposes at temperatures above 370 °C, releasing O 2 . 2KBrO3 → 2KBr + 3O2 A strong oxidizing agent. When a solid is mixed with easily oxidized substances such as carbon or sulfur, it explodes when heated. It is used as a bleaching and modifying agent for flour, and as an analytical reagent (for bromide titration and as a standard substance for redox titration). Toxic.
