Transfer system - Furikaseido (English) Girosystem

Japanese: 振替制度 - ふりかえせいど（英語表記）Girosystem

A system in which payments are settled by book-entry transfers such as bank deposits, using transfer certificates instead of currency payments. In this system, deposit transfers are made directly at the payer's instruction, and it has long been developed in continental Europe, especially in Germany and Austria. Compared to the check system developed in the UK and the US, deposit transfers can be made more directly without moving checks. This type of transfer system does not exist in Japan, but similar systems include transfers between current accounts at ordinary banks, exchange balances on the Bank of Japan current account, transfers for the settlement of domestic exchange balances, and postal transfer savings.

通貨による支払いに代えて振替証書を利用し，銀行預金などの帳簿上の振替によって支払決済を行う制度。この制度では預金の振替は支払人の指図によって直接行われ，ヨーロッパ大陸，特にドイツ，オーストリアで古くから発達した。イギリス，アメリカに発達した小切手制度に比べて，預金の振替は小切手の移動を伴わずより直接的に行うことができる。日本ではこの種の振替制度は存在しないが，類似したものとして普通銀行の当座預金口座間の振替，日本銀行当座勘定による交換尻，内国為替尻の決済のための付替 (つけかえ) ，郵便振替貯金などがある。
