Born: March 20, 1867, Hiroshima [Died] April 15, 1950. Tokyo lacquer artist. Maiden name Fujioka, real name Chutara. In 1893, he graduated from the first class of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, Department of Lacquer Art. In the same year, he became an assistant professor at the same school, and although he temporarily resigned, he devoted himself to teaching the next generation of artists at his alma mater for 32 years. From 1896 to 1908, he traveled around Japan with Okakura Tenshin as an investigator for the preservation plan for ancient temples and shrines, and in 1904, he traveled to the United States with Tenshin and others. He worked at the Oriental Department of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and later at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1908, he returned to Japan via London, Paris, Germany, Russia, and China. After returning to Japan, he devoted himself to research on Rakuro lacquerware and anodized lacquerware, and in particular, he worked hard to perfect white lacquer, making a great contribution to the lacquer art world. He became a judge for the Teiten Exhibition in 1927, and a member of the Imperial Art Academy in 1941. His major works include "Plaque with a Wagtail on a Rock" (1904), "Lacquer Box with the Design of the Dawn's Roar" (30), "Silver Scroll Tray with Acala Image" (43), and "Sword and Brush Inkstone Box with the Design of Reed Cutting" (47).
