Fritz von Unruh

Fritz von Unruh

German playwright. Born into a Prussian military aristocratic family, he was educated with the imperial princes and served as a lancer in World War I, but later became an ardent pacifist. He is often compared to Kleist, who came from a similar family background, and his expressionist plays, The Officer (1910) and Before the Decision (1915, Kleist Prize winner), are works that criticize obedience and discipline from a humanistic standpoint. His work The Clan (premiered in 1918), which uses abstract techniques to portray the horrors of war, became a representative work of expressionism as a humanitarian anti-war play. After the war, as class struggle intensified, his idealistic humanitarianism gradually lost its power. He published Prince Louis-Ferdinand, Bonaparte, and the musical The Fair, and went into exile in the United States in 1932. After returning to Japan in 1952, he wrote works such as "Wilhelmus von Oranien" (1953) and the comedy "Bismarck," but these no longer received much attention.
