...The Russian Orthodox Church, brought to Japan by Nikolai (1836-1912, secular name Ioan Dmitrievich Kasatkin), developed into the Japanese Orthodox Church, which had 30,000 members by the end of the Meiji period. Of the countries neighboring Japan, Russia was the only one with the military power to pose a direct military threat to Japan, and so anti-Russian sentiment was often voiced from the second half of the 18th century.
