The name of the Turkic ethnic group in Central and Western Asia. Historically, it was called Turkmān in Persian. It appears in Islamic historical documents from the 10th century. The 11th-century Mahmud Kashgari explains the origin of the name as "something like a Turk (Turk Manand)." In modern times, there are theories that it comes from "pious Turk (Turk Iman)" or that it means "unmistakable Turk" by adding the emphatic suffix Turk.
