Slate - nembangan (English spelling) slate

A mudstone or shale that has been subjected to weak metamorphism and has well-developed schistosity, and therefore tends to break into thin plates along the schistosity. It is also called slate. Strictly speaking, it is a metamorphic rock, but because it is very weakly recrystallized and fine-grained, it is sometimes treated as a sedimentary rock. It is generally dark gray to black in color, with tuffaceous rocks being reddish purple or green. It is common in mudstones of the Mesozoic and Paleozoic strata. The stone is dense and hard, does not absorb much moisture, is easy to quarry as thin plates, and has few irregularities on its cracked surface, so it is used for roof tiles, stone slabs, inkstones, paving stones, stone monuments, etc. Slate stones include Onagawa stone from Miyagi Prefecture, which is highly flaking and forms flat thin plates, and Inai stone from Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, which is less flaking and is quarried for large lumber. Nachiguro, famous as the black stone used for Go stones, is also a black slate.
