…German Renaissance painter. Born in Kronach in Upper Franconia. Little is known about his training period. Around 1500, he moved to Vienna, the major center of European culture at the time, and it was here that he produced his major early works. His religious paintings from his Vienna period, such as Jerome the Penitent (1502) and Christ on the Cross, are tragic and full of tense religious emotion, making them stand out among German paintings of the time. His Rest on the Flight into Egypt, from around 1504, is a lyrical work that incorporates a depiction of the fresh nature of early spring, and it clearly shows the characteristics of Cranach at this time as a member of the Danube School. …
