Southern Christian Leadership Conference

In 1955, when black citizens launched a bus boycott against discriminatory seating in Montgomery, Alabama, where he was stationed, King led the boycott to success through nonviolent direct action that combined the Gandhian method with the love of Christ (agape). He then founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and held nonviolent training sessions throughout the South. The black struggle of the early 1960s unfolded with King as the central link in uniting the five major black organizations, arousing public opinion and leading to the passage of two civil rights laws.
