A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family. It is found in the eastern part of the Asian continent. In Japan, it grows on riverbanks west of the Kanto region, but it is said that it is not native to the wild and was introduced from China and naturalized. It is sometimes cultivated for decorative purposes. The stems are many and stand upright, about 1 to 1.5 meters tall, and the lower part is hairless. The leaves are opposite and usually deeply divided into three parts with short stalks. The upper leaves are small and undivided, and are oblong. In August and September, pale pink-purple flower heads are densely produced. Each flower head consists of five small flowers, and the style is long and divided into two at the end. The achene has a white pappus. It is one of the seven autumn herbs and is also used for medicine. In China, the scent of this herb was used as a substitute for perfume.
