Koriyama Basin

A basin in the middle of the Abukuma River in central Fukushima Prefecture. In a narrow sense, it is a basin that extends from Mt. Onagura south to Mt. Ushiwahara north, but in a broad sense, it can also include the Motomiya Basin in the north and the Sukagawa Basin in the south. It is sandwiched between Mt. Kawageta and Mt. Hitaidori to the west, and the Abukuma Plateau to the east. In the west, there are faults that are associated with hot springs such as Bandai Atami and Genda. On the eastern edge, the Koriyama Formation covers the foothills of the western edge of the Abukuma Plateau, which is made of gently inclined granodiorite. The Koriyama Formation also contains peat, and even near the surface, it is thought to have been deposited in the middle Pleistocene (Pleistocene) epoch. The Otsuki alluvial fan is thought to have spread over this layer, and the Gohyaku River, Ouse River, Sasahara River, and other rivers dissected it, forming plateaus such as Taimanbara, Hiroyabara, Kotanbara, Otsukibara, and Ushibabara. The center of this area is Koriyama City.

福島県中央部、阿武隈川(あぶくまがわ)中流部の盆地。狭義には大名倉(おおなぐら)山以南、牛庭原(うしにわはら)以北に広がる盆地、広義には北方の本宮盆地(もとみやぼんち)および南方の須賀川盆地(すかがわぼんち)を含めることもある。西は川桁(かわげた)山、額取(ひたいどり)山、東は阿武隈高地に挟まれている。西部には磐梯熱海(ばんだいあたみ)、源田などの温泉を伴う断層がある。東縁は緩く傾いた花崗閃緑(かこうせんりょく)岩からなる阿武隈高原西縁の山麓(さんろく)階を郡山層が被覆している。この郡山層は泥炭も含み、表面近くでも更新世（洪積世）中期の堆積(たいせき)とみられている。この層の上に大槻扇状地(おおつきせんじょうち)が広がったとみられ、五百(ごひゃく)川、逢瀬(おうせ)川、笹原(ささはら)川などはこれらを開析して、対面原、広谷(こうや)原、庚坦(こうたん)原、大槻原、牛庭原などの台地を形成した。中心地は郡山市である。
