The English word "brush" includes brushes, and when you want to limit it to a writing brush, you can use "writing brush" or "oriental brush." ブラッシュともいう。板に獣毛などを植えつけ,ちりやほこりを払う,あるいはのりや塗料を塗る道具。日本語の〈刷毛〉に相当し,ブラシにも刷子の字をあてることがある。《和名抄》では髤筆と書いて〈はけ〉と読ませ,漆を塗るものと定義している。刷毛と書くのは和製熟語。英語のブラシは筆を含み,毛筆に限定したいときはwriting brushとかoriental brushという。起源は太古にまでさかのぼり,材料や用途に応じてさまざまな名で呼ばれる。
