Year of death: January 29, 8th year of Kyoho (March 5, 1723) Year of birth: Manji 2 (1659) A Shintoist and Japanese scholar of the mid-Edo period. His real surname was Kamo no Kami no Kami. He was also called Nashiki. He was commonly known as Sakyo Gondayu. His pen name was Keisai. He was born in Atago County, Yamashiro Province (Kyoto City) to Sukenaga. He became a shrine official at Shimogamo Shrine (Kamo Mioya Shrine in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, also known as Shimogamo Shrine) and was awarded the rank of Shosanmi. He studied under Yamazaki Ansai and was regarded as a leading figure in Suika Shinto. In 1694 (Genroku 7), he lamented the decline of Shimogamo Shrine and requested the Imperial Court to revive the Aoi Festival, which had been suspended since the beginning of the 16th century. His books include "Oyasuki" and "Jindai Wakewa". He was also well versed in Japanese history, and wrote 40 volumes of "Nihon Itshi" in an attempt to restore the remains of "Nihon Koki".
