A group of islands scattered off the east coast of Sumatra in western Indonesia, adjacent to the Riau Islands. It was formed when the tip of the Malay Peninsula collapsed, with Lingga and Singkep being its main islands. It consists of a total of 383 islands. Many of the islands are hilly and mountainous. It is a key point for east-west transportation and has a complicated history. Tin mining is also carried out, but fishing is the main industry. The inhabitants are mainly Malay and Chinese.
