1548‐1606 Dutch painter, poet, and art theorist. Born in the Southern Netherlands. He lived in Italy from 1573, then became friends with Spranger and collaborated with him in Vienna, before moving to Haarlem in 1583. Along with the printmaker Goltzius and the painter Cornelius Z. Cornelisz, he became a central figure in the Haarlem Mannerists, but his strengths lie in his theory rather than in his actual work. His representative work is the five-part Book of Painters (1604), and the third part, "Lives of Famous Painters from the Netherlands and Germany," is the first biographical material on the Northern School of painting and is comparable to Vasari's Lives of the Artists, which deals with the Italian school of painting.
