Carel van Mander

Dutch painter, poet, and art theorist. Born in the Southern Netherlands. He lived in Italy from 1573, then became friends with Spranger and collaborated with him in Vienna, before moving to Haarlem in 1583. Along with the printmaker Goltzius and the painter Cornelius Z. Cornelisz, he became a central figure in the Haarlem Mannerists, but his strengths lie in his theory rather than in his actual work. His representative work is the five-part Book of Painters (1604), and the third part, "Lives of Famous Painters from the Netherlands and Germany," is the first biographical material on the Northern School of painting and is comparable to Vasari's Lives of the Artists, which deals with the Italian school of painting.

オランダの画家，詩人，芸術理論家。南ネーデルラントの出身。1573年よりイタリアに滞在，次いでスプランヘルと親交を結びウィーンで協業したのち，1583年ハールレムに移住。版画家ホルツィウス，画家コルネリスゾーンC.Cornelisz.とともに〈ハールレムのマニエリスト〉の中心的存在となったが，彼の長所は実制作よりもむしろ理論面に存している。5部から成る《画家の書》(1604)が代表作で，とくにその第3部〈ネーデルラントおよびドイツ著名画家列伝〉は最初の北方画派の伝記資料として，イタリア画派に関するバザーリの《芸術家列伝》に匹敵する。
