Born: November 4, 1803, Naples [Died] January 15, 1878. Ciernobbio Italian dancer. He trained most of the most representative ballerinas of the 19th century and built the foundations of today's ballet. He studied under J. de Berval and P. Gardel, and served as the principal dancer at La Scala under S. Vigano. In 1820, he published Traité élémentaire, théoretique et pratique de l'art de la danse (General Theory and Practice of the Art of Dance) in Milan, and in 1830, The Code of Terpisichore (The Art of Dance) in London. These books, considered the greatest theoretical and technical books in the history of dance, earned him immortal fame. In 1837, he was appointed director of the Imperial School of Dance attached to La Scala, where he established standards that became typical of dance schools in European countries. In 1856, he was invited to Moscow to become a teacher at the dance school and spread Italian ballet techniques to Russia. He is the creator of the Attitude ballet technique and has composed over 70 choreographic works.
