Supercluster of galaxies

A grouping of galaxies slightly larger than a galaxy cluster. Its existence, which had been proposed since the early 1950s, was revealed in the late 1970s to be a common structure found throughout the universe, and it was named a supercluster. A familiar example is the Local Supercluster, in which many galaxy groups and galaxy clusters are gathered in a flattened disk shape with a major axis of about 100 million light years. The Local Group, which includes our Milky Way, is located on the periphery of this supercluster, and the Virgo Cluster is at its core. Since then, many superclusters have been discovered, while the existence of hollow regions (voids) with almost no galaxies has also become known, leading to the proposal of a bubble model of the universe (galaxies are distributed on the surface of the bubble, the areas where the bubbles stick together correspond to superclusters, and the internal cavities correspond to voids).

銀河団より一回り大規模な銀河の集団体系。1950年代初期から提唱されていたその存在は、1970年代末には宇宙全域にみられる一般的構造であることが明らかにされ、超銀河団と名づけられた。身近な例は局部超銀河団で、長径約1億光年の扁平(へんぺい)な円盤形に多くの銀河群や銀河団が集まっている。わが銀河系を含む局部銀河群はこの超銀河団の周辺部に位置しており、その中核部には、おとめ座銀河団が存在する。その後も多数の超銀河団がみいだされる一方、銀河がほとんどない空洞領域（ボイド）の存在も知られるようになり、宇宙の泡モデル（銀河は泡の表面に分布し、泡同士のくっつきあったところが超銀河団、内部の空洞がボイドに相当する）が提唱されている。
