Born: March 17, 1811, Berlin [Died] December 16, 1878. Sachsenhausen German novelist and playwright. A leading figure in the "Young Germany" movement. He also worked as a journalist. He grew up in a poor family, but was inspired by the 1830 revolution and began writing. His novel Der Sadduzäer von Amsterdam (1834) criticized the narrow-mindedness of the religious world, and later became the basis for his play Uriel Acosta (47). His novel Wally, the Doubter (35), which challenged the established view of marriage, led to his imprisonment, and the Young Germany movement was subsequently persecuted. He served as an advisor to the Dresden Court Theater from 1847 to 1849. In addition to his numerous plays, he wrote a lengthy social novel, Die Ritter vom Geiste (The Knights of the Spirit) (9 volumes, 50-51), and a major work criticizing the Catholic Church, Der Zauberer von Rom (The Magicians of Rome) (9 volumes, 58-61).
