Chemical formula: HClO ₂ . It is an unstable acid that is formed as an intermediate when chlorine dioxide reacts with water.
2ClO ₂ +H ₂ O→HClO ₂ +HClO ₃
However, it immediately decomposes according to the following formula:
4HClO ₂ →3ClO ₂ +1/2Cl ₂ +2H ₂ O
By reacting with alkali instead of water, chlorite is obtained along with perchlorate.
2ClO ₂ +2KOH→KClO ₂ +KClO ₃ +H ₂ O
Aqueous solutions of chlorite exhibit strong oxidizing properties, and heavy metal salts easily explode when heated or shocked.
