A city in the central-eastern part of Saitama Prefecture, in the northern part of the Omiya Plateau. It was incorporated as a city in 1971. The main settlement was a post station on the Nakasendo road in the early modern period. Even after the Takasaki Line was opened in the early Showa period, it remained a farming area until the 1950s, but from the 1960s, sake breweries, machinery factories, etc. moved in, and the area became a residential area, leading to a rapid population increase. 埼玉県中東部,大宮台地北部の市。1971年市制。主集落は近世初期中山道の宿駅であった。昭和初期に高崎線開通後も1950年代までは農村地帯であったが,1960年代から酒造,機械などの工場が進出し,住宅地化も進み人口が急増した。石戸に蒲桜(かばざくら)(天然記念物)がある。19.82km2。6万8888人(2010)。
