A Catholic church remaining in Minamiyamate-cho, Nagasaki City. In 1864 (Genji 1), French missionary Louis-Théodore Furet (1816-1900) built a church for French residents in Oura, and in February of the following year, 1865, dedicated it to the 26 Japanese Martyrs who were martyred in Nagasaki. Oura Cathedral was commonly known as the French Temple at the time. When it was first built, it had three towers in a mixed Gothic and Baroque style, but in 1875 (Meiji 8) it was remodeled to only have one tower in the center. It is the oldest example of Western-style architecture, especially Gothic-style architecture, from the time Japan first opened its doors to the world. In March 1865 (Keio 1), a group of Urakami villagers visited Bishop Petitjean at Oura Cathedral and confessed that they were Catholics. This became a historic event known as the "discovery of Christians." Oura Cathedral became a memorial site for the revival of the hidden Christians who had secretly continued to practice their faith despite 250 years of persecution. It was damaged by the atomic bomb in 1945 (Showa 20), but was repaired and rebuilt in 1952. Following its designation as a national treasure in 1933 (Showa 8), it was designated a national treasure for the second time in 1953. [Kentaro Miyazaki] [Registration as a World Heritage Site] Oura Cathedral was registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 2018 (Heisei 30) as a component part of the "Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region" (World Cultural Heritage).
