A river in the eastern part of England. It is also called the Great Ouse because there are rivers of the same name in Yorkshire and Sussex. The name comes from the Sanskrit root meaning water. It is 250 km long. It originates in the Northampton Hills and flows northeast through Bedford to St. Ives. From there it flows into the lowlands of the Fenland and begins to meander, joining tributaries such as the Cam and the Lark, before flowing north from near Ely and emptying into the Wash at King's Lynn. The meandering areas in the middle and lower reaches were once marshes, but in the 17th century two artificial straight channels, the old and new Bedford Rivers, were dug, improving the area, and it is now Britain's granary.
