Fire breaker - Hiyokechi

Japanese:
Fire breaker - Hiyokechi

During the Edo period, these vacant lots were set aside for fire prevention. In addition to preventing the spread of fire, they also served as evacuation shelters for disaster victims. The shogunate had been planning to set up firebreaks since before the great fire of 1657 (Meireki 3), but the Meireki fire led them to rapidly put them into action. Nakahashi Hirokoji and Ryogoku Hirokoji (both in Chuo Ward, Tokyo) appeared at this time. After that, a particularly large number of firebreaks were set up until the middle of the Kyoho era (1716-1736). As the system of town firefighters was put in place, many of the firebreaks were abolished.
