Born: April 23, 1844, Honolulu [Died] June 9, 1926. Honolulu. First president of the Republic of Hawaii (in office 1894-1900), first governor of the US Territory of Hawaii (in office 1900-03). Born the son of an American missionary, he worked as a lawyer and politician in Hawaii. In 1887, he led a revolutionary movement and succeeded in drafting a constitution that reduced the powers of King Kamehameha, and in the same year became an associate justice of the Supreme Court of Hawaii under the new constitution. In 1893, he started a revolution to overthrow the monarchy, and the following year was elected president of the Republic of Hawaii by the Constitutional Convention. In 1898, he went to Washington, D.C., and expressed his desire to annex Hawaii to the US. When annexation was realized in 1900, he was appointed first governor of the Territory of Hawaii by President W. McKinley. He served as a federal district court judge in Hawaii from 1903 to 1915.
