During the Kamakura period, Kawagoe Shigeyori's mansion was built in Ueto, on the lowlands west of the Irumagawa River, and in the mid-15th century, Kawagoe Castle was built on the northern end of the plateau, marking the beginning of the history of the castle town of Kawagoe. During the Edo period, it was valued as a key castle north of Edo, and with Matsudaira Nobutsuna and Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu as its lords, transportation between the city and Edo became active via the Kawagoe Highway and the Shingashi River, and the town prospered to the point of being called "Little Edo." ...
