Fujita Farm Dispute

Japanese: 藤田農場争議 - ふじたのうじょうそうぎ

A tenant dispute in Fujita Village, Kojima County, Okayama Prefecture. A representative example of the Japanese peasant movement in the 1920s. Fujita Village was one of the farms that had been reclaimed by the Fujita Group since 1899. By 1911, settlers had been recruited under harsh tenant contracts, and by 1922 the farmland had grown to 1,287 chobu and 439 tenant farm households. Farm management was divided into direct management, cultivation contract, and tenant farming, and farmers generally lived in company farm buildings and were in a state of debt slavery. In 1921, the company stopped lending fertilizer, which triggered a tenant dispute, and thereafter frequent disputes occurred from August to December 1921, October 1922 to May 1923, January to June 1925, and December 1927 to June 1930.

岡山県児島郡藤田村の小作争議。1920年代の日本農民運動の代表的事例。藤田村は藤田組により1899年から干拓された農場の一つで，1911年までに過酷な小作契約のもとに入植者を募集し，22年には農場の耕地1287町歩，小作農439戸に達した。農場の経営は直営，耕作請負，小作農に分かれ，農民は一般に会社の農舎に住み，債務奴隷的な状態におかれていた。1921年，会社が肥料代貸与を中止したことを契機に小作争議がおこり，以後1921年8～12月，22年10月～23年5月，25年1～6月，27年12月～30年6月と争議が頻発した。
