A general term for fish that live in saltwater. It is the opposite of freshwater fish and is also called saltwater fish. Depending on the species, they live in a variety of places, such as the open ocean, coasts, bays, estuaries, brackish lakes, the surface, middle and bottom layers, the deep sea, reefs, coral reefs and seaweed beds, and many species migrate between these areas as they grow or with the seasons. There are significantly more species of marine fish than freshwater fish, and marine fish account for approximately 98% of Japan's total fish production, including industrial fishing and aquaculture. Seawater contains various inorganic salts, including sodium chloride, and while the concentration is somewhat lower in coastal waters, the total salt concentration in ocean waters reaches approximately 3.5%.
