Aelia Eudoxia

Aelia Eudoxia
?‐404
Wife of the Eastern Roman Emperor Arcadius. Daughter of the Frankish Bout, she was crowned Augusta in 400. A devout Orthodox Christian, she wielded great influence over her husband, especially in domestic and religious matters. The downfall of Eutropius and the banishment of Constantinople's Bishop I. Chrysostom were due to her displeasure. However, she herself was also influenced by the wives of eunuchs and courtiers. She bore four daughters and one son (later Theodosius II), and probably died of a miscarriage.
