[Art of the Liao Dynasty] In 916 (Zhenming 2 of the Later Liang Dynasty), Yelu Abaoji (Taizu) unified the various tribes of the Khitan people, who had lived in Mongolia from the northeastern region of China, and proclaimed himself emperor. In 936 (Tianxian 11, Tianfu 1 of the Later Jin Dynasty), Taizong (Yelu Deguang) took advantage of the unrest in the Central Plains to aid the establishment of the Later Jin Dynasty and forced it to cede the Sixteen Prefectures of Yanyun, but in 946 (Huitong 9, Kaiun 3 of the Later Jin Dynasty), Taizong, enraged by the Later Jin Dynasty's defection, sacked the capital Bianjing (Kaifeng, Henan Province) and destroyed the Later Jin Dynasty. The following year, 947 (Datong 1, Tianfu 12 of the Later Han Dynasty), Taizong changed the country's name to Liao and sent all of the Later Jin Dynasty's 100 artisans, map books, and other items to Shangjing, before returning north.
