Also called heat content or heat function. A thermodynamic function. If the internal energy is U , the pressure is p , and the volume is V , then enthalpy H is defined as H = U + pV . The word originates from the Greek enthalpo (to warm). For small changes under constant pressure, the amount of heat generated or absorbed is expressed as the change in enthalpy. The differential relationship is dH = TdS + Vdp . The condition for equilibrium in a system under adiabatic and constant pressure is when H is minimized.
