Mokichi Fujita

Mokichi Fujita
1852-1892 A journalist and politician from the Meiji period.
Born June 25, 1852. Soma Gyofu was his son-in-law. As editor-in-chief of the Yubin Hochi Shimbun, he debated with Fukuchi Ochi of the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun from the standpoint of freedom and civil rights. In 1882, he participated in the formation of the Constitutional Reform Party, and in 1890, he became a member of the House of Representatives (elected twice). He died August 19, 1892. He was 41 years old. He was from Bungo (Oita Prefecture). He graduated from Keio University. His maiden name was Hayashi. His pen name was Meikaru. His works include "History of the Eastward Movement of Civilization" and "Record of Great Achievements of Saving the People."

嘉永(かえい)5年6月25日生まれ。相馬御風(そうま-ぎょふう)は娘婿。「郵便報知新聞」の主幹として,自由民権の立場から「東京日日新聞」の福地桜痴と論戦。明治15年立憲改進党結成にくわわり,23年衆議院議員(当選2回)。明治25年8月19日死去。41歳。豊後(ぶんご)(大分県)出身。慶応義塾卒。旧姓は林。号は鳴鶴。著作に「文明東漸(とうぜん)史」「済民偉業録」など。
