A nationalistic private school founded in July 1922 in Yogyakarta on the Indonesian island of Java under the leadership of Suwardi Seryaningrat (Ki Hajar Dewantoro). Taman Siswa means "school garden." It was founded by incorporating Tagore's human ideals and the educational views of Montessori and Froebel into the traditional Javanese boarding school (pesantren) philosophy. It was widely accepted by people all over the country as a counterweight to the colonial education system and philosophy, and by the mid-1930s, more than 200 Taman Siswa schools had been established in Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, and other areas.
