Emperor of Brazil (reigned 1831-1889). Son of Pedro I. He contributed to peace and prosperity in the country for a long time, but fought in the Uruguay War in 1864 and the Paraguayan War from 1864 to 1870, which led to financial crisis. He also showed sympathy for the republican ideology that was widespread at the time and adopted a policy of abolishing slavery, which caused him to lose the support of the landlord class. He abdicated in the 1889 revolution and went into exile in Europe. Related article: Pedro I Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
