Autopurification of the vagina

Bacteriological examination of the vagina detects many types of bacteria, including streptococci, staphylococci, Escherichia coli, and bacteroids. However, in mature women, it is relatively rare for these bacteria, Trichomonas protozoa, or fungi such as Candida to increase abnormally and cause vaginitis. One reason for this is that the vaginal epithelium of mature women becomes thicker due to the action of estrogen secreted from the ovaries, making it more resistant to infection. Another reason is that the glycogen that increases in the vaginal epithelium due to the action of estrogen is converted into lactic acid by Döderlein's Lactobacillus, keeping the vagina acidic, making it difficult for other bacteria to grow.

腟内を細菌学的に検査すると，連鎖球菌，ブドウ球菌，大腸菌，バクテロイドなど多種の菌が検出される。しかし成熟婦人では，これらの菌やトリコモナス原虫あるいはカンジダなどの真菌が異常に増加して腟炎を起こすことは比較的まれである。この理由の一つは，成熟婦人の腟は卵巣から分泌されるエストロゲンの作用で上皮が厚くなり，感染に対する抵抗性が強いためである。もう一つの理由は，やはりエストロゲンの作用により腟の上皮中に増加するグリコーゲンをデーデルライン乳酸杆菌が乳酸に変えるため，腟内が酸性に保たれ，その他の菌が増殖しにくいためである。
