Formerly the organ of the German Social Democratic Party. For over 100 years, it had evolved alongside the German socialist movement as a weekly newspaper, but was closed in February 1982 due to financial difficulties. Its predecessor was a weekly newspaper published in Paris from 1844 to 1845 by a German refugee, with the cooperation of Marx and H. Heine. It was later founded in Leipzig in 1876 by W. Liebknecht and others, based on a resolution to unify the organ newspapers of the German Socialist Workers' Party at the Gotha Conference. Publication was banned under Bismarck's Anti-Socialist Law (enacted in 1878), so it was renamed Berliner Volksblatt in 1884, but when the Anti-Socialist Law was abolished in 1890, the party changed its name to the Social Democratic Party and the title was restored to Vorwörtz.
