A state in western Austria. It borders Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Germany. Its area is 2,601 km2 and its population is 340,000 (1995). Its capital is Bregenz. The indigenous people in the south spoke Rhaeto-Romanic until the 17th century, but today they have unified their language into the Germanic Alemannic dialect. The state faces westward and is mostly part of the Rhine basin. The Rhine Valley plain and the area around Lake Constance have a warm climate. It is a scenic area with a rich undulation that stretches from the Bregenz Forest through the Arlberg mountain range to the glaciers, and is popular with tourists. The Alpine foreland in particular is famous as a skiing mecca.
