An insect of the family Bombycidae in the order Lepidoptera. Also called mulberry moths, its larvae are pests of mulberry trees. It is found throughout Japan, as well as in China and Korea. Its eggs are flat and circular, about 1.5 mm in diameter; non-diapausing eggs are yellowish brown in color, while diapausing eggs are gray-green. The shape of the larvae resembles that of silkworms, but they are smaller overall, and when the head is retracted, the thorax becomes round and large. The larvae are brown in color, and some have a black pattern on the midline of their back, while others do not. Like silkworms, they have eye-shaped, crescent-shaped, and star-shaped patterns, but they also have a pair of patterns on their thorax. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
